Steak Dinner

After a long day at work, who doesn't love to sit down to a nice steak dinner? Easily make this restaurant style favorite at home - without overeating or an expensive price tag! If you'd like to prep some of this dinner ahead of time, you can bake the potatoes on the weekend and just heat them up once the steaks are ready, or use frozen microwaveable vegetables to make this meal even easier.

RECIPE:

Ingredients:*

  • 5 oz steak

  • 2 c. steamed broccoli

  • 1 small baked potato

  • 1/2 tbsp. butter

Instructions:

  1. Heat oven to 450 degrees F.

  2. Poke potato all over with a fork. Place directly on oven rack and bake for 40 - 45 minutes.

  3. Wash and prepare broccoli. (The broccoli and steaks will probably take around 15 minutes total, so you may want to wait before moving on to the remaining steps for everything to finish at the same time.)

  4. Pat steak dry with paper towels to remove any moisture.

  5. Season both sides of the steak generously with salt and pepper.

  6. If steaming broccoli on the stovetop, place steamer basket in a pot and fill until water is just below the basket (about 1"). Bring water to a boil.

  7. Heat a heavy pan over medium-high heat until it gets VERY hot (you may want to turn on your exhaust fan). Stainless steel or cast-iron skillets will be the best because they can withstand high heat.

  8. Add 1 tbsp of oil to the pan. When the oil shimmers and moves fluidly around the pan, it's time to cook your steak.

  9. Set your steak carefully down away from you in the pan, to avoid oil splattering.

  10. Let sear for 3 - 4 minutes. DO NOT flip early or check if they're browning - doing so prematurely won't allow it to crust.

  11. Add broccoli to steamer basket and cover. Steam for 5 minutes, or until broccoli reaches desired consistency.

  12. Flip the steaks when they release easily and have developed a brown crust. Cook on this side for 4 minutes for medium rare. (Cooking times may vary depending on thickness of your steak)

  13. Bring potatoes out of the oven and dress with butter, salt, and pepper. Enjoy!
